Creative Dialog re-imagined the public realm wayfinding for one of the world's most ambitious cultural districts.

Drawing on the dichotomy between traditional Emirati clothing and contemporary information design, the team delivered a minimalist toolkit of sculpted illuminated Corian forms and black-and-white graphics that respect the iconic architecture rather than compete with it.

Objective

Saadiyat Island is Abu Dhabi's premier ocean-side destination, and sitting at the centre of this stellar precinct is the Saadiyat Cultural District — a breathtaking collection of the world's most renowned cultural institutions, and as much an ode to the future of Emirati culture and ambition as it is to the finest names in art and architecture.

Offering one of the highest concentrations of cultural experiences anywhere, the district is home to Louvre Abu Dhabi, Berklee Abu Dhabi and Manarat Al Saadiyat, and will be the future home of Zayed National Museum, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. Positioned as a global forum for innovation, creativity and dialogue, the district demanded an upgrade to its existing public realm wayfinding scheme, which had fallen significantly short of client expectation. Creative Dialog was directly engaged to re-imagine the visitor experience — to make it welcoming, intuitive and imbued with quintessential Abu Dhabian hospitality.

Our Approach

Creative Dialog approached the brief as an exercise in cultural restraint — recognising that wayfinding for a district of this calibre must respect the significance of the site, not try to compete with the architecture. The goal was a site-wide navigational response that was contextual, fostered exploration, and made each visitor journey an easy and convenient one.

_We developed a beautifully conceived wayfinding toolkit anchored by subtle, sculpted illuminated Corian forms that speak to the destination's refined character.

_We designed a black-and-white graphic system that plays between the dichotomy of traditional Emirati clothing and contemporary information design — allowing cultural elements to enhance the wayfinding system without overstating themselves.

_We delivered a complete site-wide bilingual Arabic-English navigation hierarchy across the district's public realm, calibrated for visitor groups of all ages, nationalities and accessibility needs.

The Outcome

The completed wayfinding system delivers a navigational layer that lets the architecture lead — present where it needs to be, invisible where it does not. The illuminated Corian forms catch ambient light without claiming it; the black-and-white graphics carry the cultural reference quietly. A public realm wayfinding programme worthy of one of the world's most ambitious cultural districts.
