Abu Dhabi Vet Lab
Brand new signage scheme for a brand new veterinary lab.
Expertise: Wayfinding Strategy, Signage Technical Design This unique project is a brand new, world class animal clinical facility falling under the jurisdiction of Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority. This clinical facility is the first of its type in the region and serves different kinds of animals (cattle, pets and falcons) within the facility campus.
Working with the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi and Stantec, this highly specialized project, consists of wide range of facilities and animal healthcare areas to serve the care, research and science needs of many types of animals within dedicated spaces.
The campus consists of administrative, surgical, laboratory and office areas catering to cats, dogs, falcons and birds, small and large animals
Designing wayfinding for medical facilities is a combination of art and science in many respects. The core aim of this initiative was to deliver an overarching navigation response that not only met the needs of daily, frequent visitors within the campus but to also connect new comers to the site both externally and internally in an intuitive and well planned manner.
Our approach was to respond to the compartmentalised nature of the site and provide cues where required based on the specifics uses and allowable access within each area of the site.
As this campus is a high security bio material site there were very specific signage needs aside from the overall needs for clear and highly legible wayfinding.
In many cases the need for absolute clarity of information in these types of settings often results in very basic and functional looking signage that focusses primarily on core needs as opposed to being visually pleasing. For this exercise we wanted to develop a highly functional yet stylish signage design that could be applied consistently across the entire campus.
For our dual language wayfinding system we also developed a series of custom pictograms and graphics as well as mapping, that complimented our clean and legible typography, ensuring that the system provides key instructions and information to a wide range of user types. Stylistically, our system adopts the use of hard wearing exterior materials with a clean design style, while internally, we adopted the use of as many eco-friendly materials as possible to develop a contemporary looking system that is highly complimentary to the interior design of the facility.
